Description

Like Trail of the Hiawatha this road is public property and continues down the valley on the original route of the Hiawatha. It is open to vehicular travel but most people are courteous. Unlike the Trail of the Hiawatha, this section is NOT operated by Lookout Pass Ski Area and there are NO "ski patrol" on the trail to help with breakdowns or injuries. This means you are on your own but without additional fees.

The official "Route of the Hiawatha Trail" is 15.1 miles, running from the East Portal, MT to Pearson, ID. (There is a lot of good riding out each end as well). This the lower section that runs from Pearson, ID to Avery, ID. You'll enjoy an additional seven train tunnels and two trestles on this road.

It is all downhill when starting at Pearson, ID but not enough to ride your brakes. The road itself used to be part of the railroad grade and sees a few cars each day, so the way is well-maintained and you won't come across too many obstacles. It is customary for vehicles to honk twice before entering a tunnel so if you hear a horn you may want to wait a moment before entering.

You can get your trail passes and bus tickets at the trailheads (bring cash) or get them at Lookout Pass Ski Area just off I-90 at the state line. They also rent bikes at the ski lodge. Phone: 208-744-1234. Theres also a shuttle bus service for an additional fee from Pearson, ID to the East Portal, MT.
